A Story from the Air
A friend asked me, “Where do you live?” I jokingly said, “My wife says I live on Delta Airlines.” They laughed, but I’m not laughing as I’m sitting in a cramped airline seat again as I write this.
“A Redeye flight” seems like an appropriate name as I fly through the night, having left San Francisco at 11:00PM, unable to sleep, yet unable to stay awake either. I’m in a land somewhere in between. I will fly into Green Bay at 9:30 in the morning, where my wife, Carol, will pick me up for the first day of our vacation. Can you say “Red Bull?”
My road manager, John, and I just did some fun math. I have flown over a million miles on Delta Airlines alone. To go around the whole world is 25,046 miles (in case you were wondering). That means I have spent enough time on Delta alone to go around the world more than 40 times.
Anyone who thinks traveling is glamorous has not traveled. Oh, please don’t hear me complaining. But I do want you to hear my heart.
Our mission is to reach as many youth as possible with the Gospel before the age of 18. A year ago we called it Mission <18> to demonstrate that we are indeed missionaries. Yet I believe we often envision missionaries as those who travel around the world to remote villages and foreign cultures to reach people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
We may not trek the plains of Africa, but we travel around the globe to reach a culture that does seem foreign to many: American youth. We love them with all our hearts. But more importantly, God loves them. That’s why we present the Gospel in their language and their culture, so that just one more may come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. That’s evangelism. That’s the great commission. That’s a mission field.
“Go into all the world…” That includes our nation, our communities, our schools, even our own backyards.
We will zigzag across this nation to team with churches, schools, festivals, and conferences. Anywhere and any time we can get a captive audience to share the Good News, we want to be there.
I just spoke to 12,000 people at a festival in Monterey, California. When it came time to respond to the Gospel I gave an invitation for people to raise their hands to trust in Jesus. All I could see was hands. I had them keep them up until a follow up person could get them information and pray with them.
They had 500 volunteers and ran out of materials. One guy alone prayed with over 40 people. They estimated 2000-3000 hands were raised to receive Christ.
I can’t imagine how the angels were spilling over with joy, rejoicing in heaven, because I myself was higher than a kite.
After I spoke, I went to the prayer tent. One of the people I met was named Bill, a guy who thought God could never forgive him for a sexual sin he had committed. But that night he believed and received Jesus, and he experienced forgiveness from the High Eternal Lover.
I’m still in the air. I’m still tired. My eyes are still red. But I can’t wait to fly again. Why? There are more Bill’s down there, waiting to hear a message of grace, forgiveness and love. Thank you for sending us out on this mission field. Mission <18>.
